Do you prefer to eat wild fish or farmed fish?

Fish Farming

As our seas and rivers have become over-fished, and fishing quotas have had to be imposed, fish farming has been growing to fulfill the demand, producing a variety of fish, including Atlantic Salmon and Rainbow Trout. It has no doubt helped to feed millions of people, some of whom might have otherwise starved.

Fish farming tends to be intensive, which means stress and suffering for the fish, and increased likelihood of pests (for example sea lice) and diseases. Chemicals and antibiotics therefore need to be used to combat this, causing pollution to the ecosystem and harm to the fish themselves and their handlers. They may also be treated with growth hormones and pigments. They may also be affected by pollution; for instance those kept in rivers may be affected by agricultural runoff or hormones. They cannot escape from toxic algal blooms or lack of oxygen during hot weather. Many fish die, and their remains need to be disposed of, as does the "fish manure", which can be very detrimental to the environment if left where it falls under the cages, and can itself lead to toxic algal blooms. The food that the fish are fed may also cause concern.

A lot of fish escape from poorly run farms or those hit by major storms. The escapees may spread pests and diseases to wild fish, and may breed with them, affecting the purity of species. Salmon vary slightly from river to river, for example. This is of particular concern if the fish have been genetically modified.

The concentration of fish often attracts predators, from sea lions in rivers to cormorants on lakes to sharks at sea. Consideration has to be given to how to deal with these, and often leads to wholesale slaughter by the farmers, whether deliberate or by predators being caught in nets.
