The main session of the International Whaling Commission opened on Monday. Japan and Norway are traditional whaling nations and want to expand their catches. Others are against whaling because of its cruelty and to protect the whale populations. Japan wants to expand its killing of whales for scientific purposes.
A proposal by Japan to switch to secret ballots, to reduce the outcry against countries in favour of whaling, was defeated by 30 to 27. Three apparently pro-whaling countries were not in a position to vote.
Earthquake hits northern Japan, no tsunami risk
A magnitude 4.9 earthquake shook the Niigata region of northern Japan on Monday, but there were no injuries or major damage from it or the 4.1 aftershock.
Scientists Aim to Tame Hog Farm Stench
Purdue University scientists are researching into pig food which would reduce the amount of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide and other pollutants that the pigs produce, and so reducing the characteristic foul stench. The experiment includes genetically modified corn that is not yet commercially available.
About 130 companies operating thousands of livestock farms have signed a consent agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). They would be fined for failing to abide by clean air, hazardous waste and emergency reporting laws, but would avoid potential liability until the EPA issues its air standards. Opponents challenging the agreement in the D.C. Court of Appeals call it a "sweetheart deal".

Israeli entrepreneurs and venture capitalists are beginning to work on "cleantech"; technology to clean up the environment, particularly water treatment. Israel is way ahead of other countries in wastewater recycling, re-using 70 to 80 percent.
