What has convinced you that global warming is real (or that it isn't), and what have you done about it?

Global Warming

Many scientists are predicting that the average temperature at the surface of the earth will gradually rise. Only last week NASA announced new evidence of global warming. Many scientists say that global warming is partly because of the activities of man.

Even if the average temperature rises, this does not mean everywhere will get warmer. For example, some scientists are predicting that a side-effect of global warming will be the failure of the Gulf Stream which warms the sea off the UK, so the UK would stop becoming warmer and actually become colder.

If the climate changes, there will be winners and losers. Some animals and plants will simply head north or head up the mountains. If the change is too fast, however, they may not be able to do so. For some, they are already at the top of the mountain and will have nowhere to go. The Scottish skiing resorts are already in trouble because there is not enough snow. We will be able to grow plants outdoors where they have been considered not hardy enough in the past, but the same areas may now be plagued by malaria-carrying mosquitoes for the first time. Other plants might not survive hot summers and droughts. While some places will get more rain, others will get less and huge numbers of people will need to migrate to survive.

Sea levels are rising, both because of ice sheets on land are melting (ice on the sea makes little difference when it melts) and because water expands as it gets warmer. This puts low-lying cities, habitats, and even island nations at risk.

There is still some dispute as to how much of the warming is man-made, and how much is natural. I see no point in pointing fingers when it comes to past actions, as the leaders in the industrial revolution had no idea that they could be affecting the climate. I believe we now know enough that we ought to be taking action if we want to minimise global warming in the future.

The world has been through extremes of hot and cold many times in the past, and survived, and I believe it will again. Some species and habitats have not, however. I would hate to see our own species or any other suffer because of our actions or inactions. Wouldn't you?

Minnesota Men Plan Trek Across the Arctic

What would you do if you were on a kayaking, and a glacier, that your 1982 map showed was in your way, had disappeared? Two kayakers from Minnesota decided raise attention on global warming by kayaking and skiing across the arctic, collecting samples and filming along the way. They hope to do it in under 100 days. Would you dare to mount such an expedition?

Authorities Allow Rig to Resume Drilling

The offshore oil rig Eirik Raud in the Barents Sea is to resume drilling after having been shut down after a small spill. DO you think that there should be any drilling in such an ecologically sensitive area?

Soybean Growers Brace for Insect Outbreak

Midwest soybean farmers are expecting the return of the soybean aphids this summer. They have to judge when or whether it is worth spraying their crops. Would you spray before you found large numbers in your crops?

Norton Won't Reduce Colo. River Water

Interior Secretary Gale Norton has rejected a plea to release less water from the already low man-made Lake Powell into the Colorado River. The plan would have reduced the water available to California, Arizona and Nevada for drinking water, irrigation water and power. Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and New Mexico felt that the release of water could be restricted as Lake Mead downstream was at a higher level. How do you feel that water should be shared between States along a river? (More about water).

U.S. Energy Chief Wants 'Clean Coal' Push

U.S. Energy Secretary Sam Bodman, who took office in February, has called on the International Energy Agency (IEA) meeting of energy ministers in Paris to do more to develop "clean" coal as an alternative energy source. He is defending the United States against claims that it is not doing enough about its own energy efficiency or emissions. Do you think that coal is the way forward?
