Shorebird Evaluated for Protected Status
A woman in Pennsylvania has petitioned to have the red knot, a migratory bird, listed as a threatened or endangered species. The bird stops annually in Delaware and New Jersey to fatten up on horseshoe crabs. The numbers of birds are down, and they concentrate in a few areas, making them vulnerable to disasters such as oil slicks. The horseshoe crab population has also been a concern.

Two Mexican gray wolves have given birth 2 8 living pups conceived through artificial insemination. The technique was non-invasive, so there are hopes that it will be possible to carry it out in the wild in future.

Catalina Bald Eagle Program Faces Cuts
From the late 1940s to the early 1970s toxic chemicals such as DDT and PCBs were dumped in the ocean near Santa Catalina Island. This made the eggs of bald eagles too weak and the birds died out. Since then biologists have been using money from a settlement with the chemical companies to intervene and care for the too-fragile eggs until the chicks are safely hatched. Now the council handing out funds say that as the toxic levels haven't dropped, they want to move the breeding program to Santa Cruz Island, 60 miles north.
