Do you think that nuclear energy is safe enough for more nuclear reactors to be built?

Gov't Proposes Moving Nuke Waste in Utah

The Energy Department is planning to move a 12 million-ton pile of radioactive waste away from where it is sitting on bare ground on a flood plain close to the Colorado River. The river supplies drinking water to about 25 million people, including inhabitants of Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Phoenix. The pile is the result of uranium ore processing.

Nuclear Plants in 31 States Said Prone

Congress has been advised that if terrorists attacked nuclear power plants in 31 states, fuel storage pools could catch fire, releasing radiation. Scientists have made recommendations for improving security and safety, including individual reviews of 68 plants.

Official: China Plans 40 Nuke Power Plants

China expects to build 40 nuclear power plants in the next 15 years. China is expecting large increases in demand for electricity, but is already suffering considerably from the pollution from coal-fired plants.

Wash. Irrigation District Shuts Off Spigot

Such is the drought in the Yakima Valley that water for irrigation has been shut off to about 1,400 farmers for the first time ever in April. Hopefully the water will be switched on in 3 weeks. Much of the region has had a very dry winter.

White Pelicans Return to N.D. Refuge

White pelicans have begun to return to Chase Lake National Wildlife Refuge, which they mysteriously abandoned last year during the breeding season, leaving their chicks to die. There are plans for extra monitoring and protection this year.

Report: Primate Species Face Extinction

A report from the World Conservation Union, the International Primatological Society and Conservation International says that nearly 25% of the world's primate species are close to extinction as a result of human activity. They provided a list of the 25 most endangered of the 625 species at risk and called for action to reverse the trend.

Fla. Senator Blocks Vote on EPA Nominee

Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida says he will block Bush nominee Stephen Johnson from appointment as head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency unless Johnson promises to stop a pesticide study being carried out in his state. The Jacksonville study, called the Children's Environmental Exposure Research Study (CHEERS), allegedly involves families voluntarily exposing their infants to pesticides in return for payment of up to $970, a video camera and a T-shirt. According to the EPA, the families are not required to take any action to expose their children; the area has been chosen because pesticides are already in use in the area.

Alaska Starts Kill of Grizzly Bears to Boost Moose RT April 06 2005

Alaska is issuing permits for hunters to lure grizzly bears to their deaths for the first time since it became a state. The aim is to reduce the numbers in places where they want to boost moose numbers. Environmentalists are against habituating the bears to human food, and are not convinced that the measure will help the moose. Grizzlies are slow to reproduce so would take some time to recover.

State Department Pressed to Open North Dakota Drainage Project to International Judgment

Officials from both sides of the U.S.-Canadian border, in Washington to press Canada's case against a drainage project in North Dakota, urged the State Department on Wednesday to send the case to an international commission.

Manitoba is worried that a North Dakota drainage project might cause nonnative animal and plant species to get into the Hudson Bay area
